Kauffman Center Film and Live Orchestra Review

Updated on Dec 1, 2024 by Seng. This post may contain affiliate links, please see our policy for details.

When it comes to unique ways to enjoy classic movies, few experiences rival a film screening accompanied by a live orchestra. Recently, my family attended a showing of Home Alone with a live orchestral performance at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, and it was a truly memorable experience. If you're debating whether this type of event is worth your time and money with a family with small kids, especially at a venue like the Kauffman Center, here's everything you need to know.

Why Consider a Film + Live Orchestra Experience?

For many families, the holiday season is a time to embrace traditions and explore new experiences. Watching a beloved movie like Home Alone with a live orchestra offers the best of both worlds: nostalgia and the excitement of live performance. However, with ticket prices starting at $75, you might wonder if it's truly worth it. Here’s my take after attending with my kids.

The Cost: A Premium Price for a Premium Experience

Tickets for this Home Alone showing cost around $75 each for a Saturday matinee performance. While this might seem steep for a family outing, consider the value: you’re getting a high-quality movie screening and the magic of a live orchestra playing John Williams' iconic score.

Additionally, parking at the Kauffman Center costs $13, and I highly recommend paying for parking in advance to save money (around $3), time, and ensure a stress-free arrival. Between ticket prices, parking, and a few snacks, the event can add up, but for a once-a-year outing, it feels justifiable.

Who Is This Event For? Kid-Friendly and Welcoming to All

One of the most refreshing aspects of this event was how inclusive and family-friendly it felt. Unlike many traditional performances at the Kauffman Center, the atmosphere was casual, with many attendees dressed in jeans or comfortable holiday attire.

The audience included plenty of children, and my kids (ages 7 to 12) thoroughly enjoyed the show. While my younger two (ages 7 and 9) did get a little fidgety during the quieter moments, it was clear they weren’t the only ones. The event catered well to families with kids, offering a short intermission to stretch, visit the restroom, or grab a quick snack.

For parents considering this outing, know that the venue is understanding of a slightly livelier audience. It’s a great introduction to the performing arts for children without the need for strict formalities.

Choosing the Best Seats: Go for the Mezzanine

When purchasing tickets, I recommend avoiding floor seats and opting for the mezzanine. Even from a side section, we had an excellent view of both the movie and the orchestra. Sitting higher up allows you to fully appreciate the synchronization between the musicians and the film. Watching the orchestra perform live was mesmerizing and enhanced the entire experience.

Planning Your Visit: Tips for a Smooth Experience

    • Book early: Popular shows like Home Alone tend to sell out, so plan ahead.
Parking: Pre-pay for parking at the Kauffman Center for added convenience.
    • Snacks and intermission: While eating in the performance hall isn’t allowed, snacks are available during intermission. The 10-minute break is also plenty of time to access the conveniently located restrooms.
    • Explore Crown Center: If you’re coming from out of town, take advantage of being in downtown Kansas City. During the winter, Crown Center’s Christmas tree and festive displays make for a perfect pre- or post-show activity.

A Unique Blend of Film and Music

One of the highlights of the Home Alone performance was the live choir during the church scene near the movie's end. Their powerful voices added a new dimension to an already poignant moment.

A close-up of the orchestra during the Home Alone score, highlighting the professionalism of the musicians.

It was also fascinating to watch the professional musicians bring the score to life. My middle schooler, who plays the clarinet, was captivated by the performers and spent more time watching them than the movie itself. Moments like these demonstrate how these events can inspire a deeper appreciation for the arts in young audience members.

    Is It Worth It?

Attending a film with a live orchestra at the Kauffman Center is more than just a movie screening; it’s an immersive experience that combines visual storytelling with the unmatched beauty of live music. While the cost might make this a special-occasion outing, it’s absolutely worth it for families looking to create a memorable holiday tradition or music lovers wanting to experience a beloved score in a new way.

Whether you’re a Kansas City local or visiting for the season, this event is a fantastic way to enjoy the holidays while supporting the arts. From the casual, kid-friendly atmosphere to the professional musicianship, the Home Alone experience at the Kauffman Center delivered on every front.

    Final Thoughts

My family walked away from the event with big smiles and fond memories. The kids loved seeing a familiar story come to life in a new way, and I was amazed by the seamless coordination between the orchestra and the movie. Even if you’re not a regular attendee of performing arts events, this is a unique opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and try something different.

With other films like Gladiator, It’s a Wonderful Life, and The Princess Bride also being offered with live orchestras, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re a movie buff, a music lover, or a parent looking for a family-friendly outing, these events at the Kauffman Center are a must-try at least once.
